Hearts win thriller

The Auckland Hearts have won a thriller in their Twenty20 match against the Wellington Blaze at Melville Park in Auckland.

Having been set 122 for victory, the Hearts managed to chase down the target off the penultimate ball, giving them a six wicket victory.

Sam Curtis (59) was the aggressor in the pursuit, slamming seven fours and earning herself a 50. She was supported by Megan Tremaine, who anchored the innings right through and finished unbeaten on 40.

The next three batsmen failed to make double figures, but Tremaine was calm under pressure and in the final over saw the game to bed with just one ball in hand.

It was tough going for the bowlers, but Lauren Ebsary and Thamsyn Newton were the best of them taking two wickets apiece.

Earlier, Ebsary had been influential with the bat as well. The Australian all-rounder scored 40 not out from 31 deliveries, seeing her side past the 120 mark.

That followed up what had been a mature 51 from Lucy Doolan. The White Fern opener took on the quick singles and noodled the ball around to great effect to set the Blaze’s innings up.

Renee Moffitt also helped out by finding the boundary early on, smashing two fours and a six on her way to 21.

Sadly though the visitors had no Sophie Devine to really destroy the bowling attack and they were restricted to 121 for three.
