Hawke's Bay heads into its seccond Challenge of the season

Hawke Cup Challenge: Hawke's Bay v Bay of Plenty

Questions marks loomed over the weather as the second Hawke Cup challenge match of the 2021/22 summer got underway at a humid Nelson Park, with threat of a wet weekend.

Holder Hawke's Bay was looking for their third consecutive defence against Zone 1 challenger and great Hawke Cup rival Bay of Plenty - two strong sides with impressive recent tenures.

With the arrival of ex-tropical cyclone Dovi, however, only the first two sessions of the opening day would be possible and the match was washed out - Hawke's Bay retaining the coveted silverware.

DAY ONE

The second Hawke Cup Challenge match of the 2021/22 season got off to a lively start with five wickets falling in the first session - after Bay of Plenty captain Ben Pomare had elected to bat against current Hawke Cup holder Hawke's Bay.
The visitors from Bay of Plenty quickly slumped to 86/5 before lunch, but a sixth-wicket fightback from young Bay of Plenty debutant Ollie White (69 not out) and veteran Pete Drysdale (34 not out) saw BOP go past 150 for no further loss.

However, the covers went on shortly afterwards in Napier at 155/5, with the final session washed out. The rain intensified overnight, with all eyes on the weekend's forecast.
