It was just the 16th time overall that a New Zealand first-class match had been abandoned without a ball bowled.
Despite the first appearance of cornflower skies, a breeze and a sun in the morning, no play was possible at Saxton Oval for a second day in succession, with slippery areas in the bowlers' run-ups yet to dry out.
No toss has been made as yet.
After 100mm of rain in the past 10 days, no play was possible at a drenched and drizzly Saxton Oval.
Teams will be back on day two with the toss yet to be made in this rematch between the Aces, who headed into the round just two points behind leaders Canterbury on the table, and the midtable Stags.
