Pakistan wilts under England assault

Pakistan wilted under a bowling assault from Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar to be crushed by an innings and 120 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford.

The fast bowler and off spinner united, as they did in the first innings, to take five wickets each to leave Pakistan gasping.

Resuming at 0-12, Pakistan had added only 11 runs when Kamran Akmal edged a lifter from Harmison and was caught behind for four.

Imran Farhat was next to go, for 34, when he was caught off Panesar's bowling.

Younis Khan battled hard for the cause while scoring 62 but when he was the fifth man dismissed at 161 the cause was all but lost. He was trapped leg before wicket by Panesar. Faisal Iqbal followed soon after for 29 and it was then a case of Harmison mowing through the lower order.

Harmison ended with 5-72 and Panesar 5-57. Following his six wicket bag in the first innings, Harmison landed his first 10-wicket bag in Tests to end with 10-91 from the match.

Panesar finished with 8-78. Finding the right combination of flight and turn, he proved unplayable at times against batsmen regarded as good players of spin.

He captured the outstanding Mohammad Yousuf by having him stumped and when he had Inzamam-ul-Haq hitting a ball onto his foot and rebounding to short-leg Ian Bell, the Pakistan innings was in disarray.

When Harmison returned to clean out the tail, he became the first England bowler for 50 years to take a 10-wicket match bag at Old Trafford.

England captain Andrew Strauss commented after the match: "That wasn't far off the perfect game.

"If you wanted to write down on a piece of paper how you wanted to win a Test match it would be pretty similar to what went on this week," SportingLife.com reported.

"From the first moment of this match there was a determination among the guys to deliver that killer punch.

"When we got Pakistan we wanted to knock them down and bury them. We did that pretty well today."
