In the current round of the Plunket Shield, Otago Volts wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder has broken a New Zealand Cricket record for the most catches in an innings in Domestic First Class cricket.
De Boorder took eight catches behind the stumps including BLACKCAPS batsman Jesse Ryder.
He beat the current record of seven catches in an innings which was taken by the likes of Robin Schofield, Martin Croy Brian Young and Bevan Griggs.
De Boorder said he was surprised when he got the record. “I wasn’t sure what the record was. There was talk out there on the ground and I knew I was getting close,” he said. “But to take that last catch and walk off to find I had won the record was great.”
He doesn’t put the record down to just his skill, but the skills of his Volts team mates. “I want to thank the bowlers for all their hard work and to give me a chance at what I did.”
Mike Hesson, the Volts coach, said it was nice that de Boorder was recognised with a new record. “I think it’s a reflection of the effort he’s put in during the season,” he said. “At the end of the game we’ll have a celebration and it will be great to put his name of the honours board.”
The eight catches also equals the record set for catches in an innings in First Class cricket from around the globe. Only six other players have taken eight catches in an innings at this level of cricket.
