DAY 2: Milo Cup & Shield Finals Day Results and Match Reports

After the great weather of day one, day two dawned overcast and wet. It was not until 1.00pm when the rain stopped that the finals matches were able to get underway. Because of travel commitments the girls’ MILO Shield matches were reduced to 20 overs, but the boys’ MILO cup matches were retained as 35 over games. The matches were played in very steamy conditions with light rain falling throughout the afternoon until 4.00pm when it became very heavy curtailing the MILO Cup. The MILO Shield final was almost complete and the last four overs were bowled in the rain to get a result.

MILO Cup:

3rd/4th Playoff : Medbury Preparatory School v Waimea Intermediate

Waimea Intermediate 95 (Hamish Drummond 51, Nicholas Clarke 4-1, Angus Simmons 3-21) Medbury 39/1

Result: Drawn as a result of rain

Medbury won the toss and asked Waimea to bat. They were under constant pressure through the regular loss of wickets. Hamish Drummond with 51 scored the majority of the runs but could not find a partner to stay with him as a number of players failed to score. In the end Waimea were out for 95 in the 29th over. For Medbury while the bowling was tight it was not until the 6th and 7th change bowlers who took the majority of wickets with Nicholas Clarke capturing an amazing 4/1 while Angus Simmons snared three. In reply Medbury were 39/1 off 11 overs when rain washed out play.

1st/2nd Playoff : Hereworth School v Southwell School  

Hereworth School 110/9 (Angus Smith 40, Te Raina Richards-Coxhead 2-18, James Hunt 2-14, Bryn Gatland 2-26) Southwell School  26/2

Result: Drawn as a result of rain

In very overcast conditions Southwell won the toss and put Hereworth in. Hereworth batted through their overs scoring 110/9 with only captain Angus Smith making an impression with 40. Again Southwell’s wickets were shared with Te Raina Richards-Coxhead, James Hunt and Bryn Gatland each taking two apiece. After 9 overs of the chase Southwell had reached 26 for 2 when the match was abandoned because of rain.

MILO Shield:  

3rd/4th Playoff: Heaton Normal Intermediate v Tai Tapu School

Heaton Normal Intermediate 177/3(Anna Radovonich 20, Catherine Tinning 39, Kate 37*) Tai Tapu School 48 (Siobhan Russel 5-4, Emma Hartland 2-13)

Result: Win to Heaton Normal Intermediate by 129 runs

Tai Tapu won the toss and put Heaton into bat which they enjoyed. In the damp conditions they were belligerent in their approach hitting the loose balls to the boundary and running hard between wickets. At the end of their 20 overs they had amassed the top team score of the finals of 177/3. Anna Radovonich, Catherine Tinning and Kate Duncan all made useful contributions. In reply Tai Tapu struggled to be all out for 48 due to the tight bowling and excellent catching of Heaton. Co-captain Siobhan Russel was to the fore taking an impressive 5/4. She was well supported by Emma Hartland who claimed two wickets.

1st/2nd Playoff : Raroa Normal Intermediate v Viscount School

Viscount School 129/4 (Teina Atiau 35*, Tabitha Laurensen 2-21) Raroa Normal School 130/6 (Jamie Alexander 28, Hannah Lee-Harwood 27, Teina Atiau 2-23)

Result: Win to Raroa Normal Intermediate by 4 wickets

Raroa won the toss and given the conditions put Viscount into bat. Viscount lost a couple of key wickets and played cautiously until Teina Atiau took control and with 35no took them through to a sound 129/4. Best of the Raroa bowlers was Tabitha Laurensen with 3/21. In reply Raroa got through to 111/4 when the rain came. When the decision to continue was made Raroa, with plenty of cheering from the sideline, nervously edged their way through to the total with two balls to spare. A tremendous girls’ final. Teina Atiau again featured with two wickets, but it was the Raroa batsmen who carried the day with Jamie Alexander scoring 28 and Hannah Lee-Harwood making 27.
