Craig Cumming named Otago Player of the Year

Volts stalwart Craig Cumming was pleasantly surprised to take home the top award at this week’s Otago Cricket dinner.

Cumming won the Player of the Year for the 2009/10 season in which he amassed over 1300 runs across the three formats.

He said it was not something he really thought about during the season however it was a nice surprise to have his name read out at the awards dinner on Wednesday night. “I suppose it’s a reflection of how well I did, however I’d happily trade it for a team trophy,” he said. “But it is a nice way to end a good, tough year.”

This year Cumming scored 924 First Class runs, including four centuries  which allowed him to equal  Bert Sutcliffe's all time record of 17 First Class centuries in a career for Otago. Cumming is humble about reaching the milestone set by a cricketing great. The question is however, will he continue next season to try and surpass Sutcliffe’s record? “It’s a huge honour to be along side Bert. It’s rather humbling,” he said. “I’m certainly delighted to equal his record. We will see how things pan out over winter. I’ll be looking to see whether I can commit to a full season rather that trying to surpass someone’s record.”

Now that the 2009/10 cricket season is over, Cumming will turn his talents to the newspaper and radio industries. He is the advertising manager at a community newspaper in the Lake Districts in Central Otago and will take up a radio gig on Radio Sport starting this Saturday between 2pm and 5pm broadcasting.
