Broom’s season comes to a shattering holt

BLACKCAPS batsman Neil Broom was a bit shocked to see his left thumb sitting out at a right angle on the first day of the Volts’ Plunket Shield game against the Knights in Whangarei but he is staying optimistic about his future.

Broom was fielding in close when Knights batsman Brad Wilson hit the ball to Broom. Unfortunately the ball hit his thumb at an odd angle which caused it to dislocate and break. “The ball displaced my thumb and it was about 90 degrees out to the left with a bone sticking out,” Broom said. “That’s what freaked me out.”

After the accident Broom was taken to hospital and he was taken into theatre on Sunday night to have the injury operated on. “There’s not much damage to the tendons and it’s quite a clean break so the doctors have put a couple of screws in it.”

Because of the break, he is now in a cast to protect the injury, before it is put into a splint. That means he won’t be able to hold a cricket bat for a while. “I should be out for about six weeks and I don’t really know what’s going to happen regarding the World Cup,” Broom said.

Although his season has come to a shattering holt Broom is staying optimistic about what the future holds. “I’m staying positive about the other things in my life. But I’ve got a golf tournament in four weeks time, so hopefully I’ll be ok for that.” he laughed.  And I’m getting married in four weeks so will be able to be more ‘hands on’ with the planning.”

He’s also enjoying supporting his brother Darren who also plays for the Volts. Darren scored a century on debut over the weekend in the Plunket Shield. “I didn’t see any of it but I think it’s awesome. He’s done very well.”
