Central Opening Pair Set up Six Wicket Win

The State Central Stags comfortably chased down the 256 posted by the State Northern Knights at Fitzherbert Park in Palmerston North.

Winning the toss and deciding to bat Northern go off to a great start with a partnership of 110 for the first wicket between Hamish Marshall and BJ Watling.

Marshall hit seven boundaries in his 57 which came off only 54 balls.  Watling scored 65 off 79.

All-rounder Joseph Yovich played sensibly with the tail to be unbeaten on 41.

But is was the Stags opening pair of George Worker and Peter Ingram whose record first wicket stand of 161-run partnership set up victory.

Worker hit the fence ten times and cleared it once as he notched up his first State Shield half century, making 82.

Ingram was dismissed for 67, enough to see him move into the top ten on the State domestic MVP points table with 106.44.

Released from international duty, Ross Taylor racked up a quick fire 46 off 38 with skipper Mathew Sinclair finishing things off with 27 not out to give his team the six wicket win.

Left arm spinner, Bruce Martin, was the pick of the Northern bowlers returning figures of two for 30 off 10.

The result doesn’t affect the standings with Northern still occupying second place after five rounds with Central in top spot.
